Record 10th Win for Jean Hugo in Vodacom Origins of Golf Series

Jean Hugo took a record 10th win on the Vodacom Origins of Golf presented by Samsung after he scored 74 at San Lameer Country Club on Saturday.

Since 2006 Hugo has been winning on the Vodacom Origins of Golf series and this week’s victory was a special milestone for him.

“A huge thank you to Vodacom because they have been supporting us for a long, long time. The events that I won eight or 10 years ago felt like they just happened naturally. Now I have to
make it happen, which is different. We’re getting older and it’s one of those things. It’s a different ball game for me these days, but more consistent,” he said.

It took serious grit for the 17-time Sunshine Tour champion to fend off the charge of his rivals. The breeze picked up throughout the day and hampered any chance he had to make birdies, so it took plenty of self-belief for him to produce the victory. That self-belief was enough in the end for a one-stroke margin over Derick Petersen, who closed with a 68, and over Peter Karmis, who fired a 69 in the final round.

In the United States, Charl Schwartzel started the week at number 125 in the FedEx Cup rankings, but he goes into the first tournament on the Playoffs, The Barclays, ranked 96th in points after his tie for third in the Wyndham Championship behind winner Davis Love III. Schwartzel shot his third consecutive 66 on Sunday to move up the leaderboard and secure his spot.

“I think sometimes in this game when you don’t really have a choice anymore, you really stick in there and give it your all,” Schwartzel said. “It was like that for me this week.”

And on the European Challenge Tour, Haydn Porteous and Brandon Stone continued their march towards gaining the European Tour cards for next season by finishing sixth and ninth respectively in the limited field Rolex Trophy in Geneva, Switzerland. That put Stone in ninth and Porteous in 10th on the Challenge Tour Road to Oman rankings – the top 15 after the final event will make it onto The European Tour.
